I have over $30,000 in professional camera equipment and do you know what I use 90% of the time to capture my family milestones? I use my iPhone.

Thats right, I use my Iphone.  As a professional photographer and Filmmaker I am sought out for my polished imagery with perfect lighting. But when I’m living my everyday life I simply don’t have the time for that perfection. I want to be present  and be a part of every moment and family milestone. Therefore I capture it quickly and easily using the smartphone in my pocket. 

It’s about capturing the moment.

The professional in me wants to cringe sometimes because the footage is imperfect, but the mom in me rejoices that I have that fleeting moment to look back on. I often think back to my wedding where my very favorite photo was captured by a friend of mine during the first dance with his iphone. It’s of Denny twirling me around and it’s blurry. This image stands out the most, over all of the images that my wedding photographer took. Why ? Because it was my very favorite moment. Prior to this experience, I would question why people chose the  “ugly photos” I gave them for their wedding albums rather than the perfect magazine worthy portraits. It was not until my own experience with this blurry smartphone photo that I understood why.  IT’S ABOUT CAPTURING THE MOMENT. 

Certainly we don’t all have the time, or the money to invest in professional shoots on a regular basis. But that does not mean we can no beautifully capture and archive all of our most special family milestones and moments. With smartphones you ALWAYS have a camera with you, we all do. It’s so amazing that we now have the ability to capture almost anything quickly and easily. 

When your baby makes their first adorable sound, you will record it on your smartphone. When they take their first bite of food and when the start to crawl,  I bet you will hit that record button. The first steps, the first words and the birthday songs should all be captured and can be with your smartphone.

It doesn’t have to be perfect !

Listen, it does not all have to be prefect. There will be shaky cameras, horrible lighting and blurry captures and I’m here to tell you that’s okay. Because it’s not about the quality of the image but rather about the moment that was captured. When watching the video back you will be reliving your most favorite family milestone and I doubt you will be critiquing the quality. So get out those smartphones and document your days. I promise you will cherish them.
